Gas separation membranes are finding increasing use in applications such as air separation, hydrogen recovery and carbon dioxide removal. As membrane materials, polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) offer an exceptional combination of permeability and selectivity for important gas pairs. However, further enhancement of performance is required in order to realize the full potential of membrane processes for challenging applications such as carbon dioxide capture. One route to improved transport properties is through the synergistic combination of materials in nanocomposite or “mixed matrix” membranes. In the context of the European FP7 “DoubleNanoMem” project, we are investigating nanocomposite membranes comprising a PIM matrix with porous nanofillers such as the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 and the metal organic framework HKUST-1.
