Single Molecule Magnets (SMM’s) are molecular clusters consisting of organic radicals or oxygen bridged transition elements/rare earths capped by organic ligand’s that have drawn much attention due to their unique individual magnetization, which arises from the overall high electronic spin of such molecules and is manifested through ferromagnetic behaviour below an energy barrier known as the blocking temperature. Such magnetic properties have lead to SMM’s being recognized as being particularly promising for use in data storage applications due to their small uniform size (10-20 A) allowing data storage densities of up to four orders of magnitude greater than is currently available.
