摘要

Environmental concern and depleting oil reserves are two major driving forces in the development of renewable microbial polymers. PHBV is an aliphatic thermoplastic polyester which is biodegradable and derives from bacterial fermentation on renewable raw materials. The polymer can be made by bacteria grown on a variety of substrates, including natural sugars, ethanol, enzyme thinned cornstarch and even sewer waste. By careful control of the process large quantities of PHBV can be accumulated as discrete intercellular granules.
