The so-called "grafting from" technique has attracted much attention recently as a novel method to synthesize surface-tethered polymer layers -3 In this technique, initiators are immobilized on a substrate and surface-initiated polymerization is used to generate surface-tethered polymer chains. A variety of polymerization methods, including thermally initiated2-3 and photoinitiated4 free-radical polymerizations have been used in the grafting from approach. "Living" radical polymerization techniques, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP),5,6 nitroxide-mediated free-radical polymerization7 and reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT),8 are viewed as advantageous approaches because these methods allow high density, low polydispersity polymer "brushes" to be formed. Moreover, these polymerization strategies allow the molecular weight to be controlled and multiblock architectures to be made.
