The production of very low, or truly zero, VOC release coatings is an important environmental goal. Water based latices have been produced for years but in order to achieve excellent film properties these materials generally require the incorporation of some amounts of coalescing aids that evaporate during film drying. In addition, such coatings are produced from styrene, acrylic and methacrylic monomers that are expensive and their manufacture produces additional industrial waste with environmental factors. Olefins, on the other hand, are the most abundant and least expensive of the vinyl monomers and their incorporation into water based coatings could have significant environmental advantages.
