Surface concentration of quaternary charge has been extensively utilized for biocidal activity via contact-kill. The importance of quantification of surface concentration for quaternary ammonium charge is of critical importance in understanding biocidal efficacy. Measurement of charge density on polymer surfaces has been reported by a variety of techniques such as fluorescein dye binding and subsequent release of bound dye by an ion exchange surfactant. As yet we have been unsuccessful in adapting this method to P[AB] copolyoxetane soft block polyurethanes surface modifiers containing quaternary side chains (Figure 1).
