As on-chip device dimensions shrink and densities increase, chip performance begins to erode. Decreasing the dielectric constant of the chip wiring insulator not only improves performance but also effects power consumption. In the high stakes struggle to introduce low-k alternatives to silicon dioxide, there is no clear winner currently.
