The paper industry is currently seeking environment-friendly alternative wet-strength resins because of the emission of carcinogenic formaldehyde and adsorbable organic chlorides (AOX) by the conventional resins.Polycarboxylic acids,such as 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acids (BTCA) and poly(maleic acid) (PMA),have been investigated as effective crosslinking agents of cellulose for improving wet performance of paper.
