The bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic cell consisting of a conjugated polymer and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) represents one of the most active research areas in recent years. Numerous polymers for better light harvesting have been intensively pursued and carefully studied via the synergistic efforts of chemists, physicists and engineers, with chemists playing the central role in the design and synthesis. Though impressive progresses have been made, the outstanding question remains: how to rationally design ideal polymers to approach 10% efficiency and beyond?
