Today's linear ?-olefins are produced mainly by ethylene oligomerization. The predominant commercial products range from C4 to C30+ and are generally produced with a distribution defined by the Schulz-Flory (S-F) equation. Problem associated with the ethylene oligomerization process is that the resultant ?-olefins (i.e.,C4-C30+) have to be fractionated to yield the desired carbon numbered linear ?- olefins. There are several reports of emerging catalysts (i.e. chromium trimerization catalysts,Brookhart type Ni and Pd catalysts,Fe pyridine bisimine catalysts,Ni-BBIM catalysts,Ni-thiolene catalysts) for ethylene oligomerization based on late transition metal catalysts. All of these catalysts also use ethylene as a feed for oligomerization.
