Synthesis of polyisobutylene (PIB) with carboxylic acid terminal functionality is of great interest, since this functionalized fully saturated polymer may be utilized in a wide range of applications. Polyisobutylene (PIB) used in a variety of fields, from biomedical applications to rubbers, due to its outstanding physical and chemical properties. Its fully saturated hydrocarbon backbone provides outstanding chemical inertness and high stability. The chemically inert polyisobutylene chain resists both acidic and alkalic environment and a variety of organic solvents and water. It is highly stable toward heat, light and oxidation, and it does not change upon aging. Therefore, PIB bearing a terminal functional group is a desired materials in many commercial applications including construction materials, biomedical devices, rubbers and lubricating oil additives. However, it has to be noted that isobutylene (IB) can only be homopolymerized by carbocationic manner to prepare PIBs.
