Our recent research efforts on polyisobutylene (PIB) - based block copolymers have focused on block copolymers containing polymethacrylates as glassy blocks. These polymers possess attractive chemical, physical and biological properties for application as drug eluting cardiovascular stent coatings. We recently reported the synthesis of PIB-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) utilizing a novel coupling reaction between bromoallyl end-functionalized PIB (PIB- AllylBr) and living PMMA anion in THF at –78 °C with high coupling efficiency (> 95%). However, in this approach excess living PMMA has to be used toward PIB-AllylBr to compensate for traces of protic impurities in PIB-AllylBr and therefore the product is contaminated with homoPMMA.
