Preparation, Characterization and Application of Thin Hyperbranched Polymer Films

Hyperbranched polymers (HBP) are three-dimensional highly branched macromolecules with numerous functional groups. Because of their unique physical and chemical properties such as low solution viscosity and the high functionality, HBPs are a promising class of materials for different chemical, physical and biomaterial applications. During the last years the great interest to HBPs is demonstrated by the increasing number of publications concerning the synthesis, modification and potential applications [e.g. 1]. Furthermore, thin films of HBP on solid substrates found a number of technical applications, e.g. as chemical sensors and multifunctional coatings. In this connection, the influence of the backbone structure of the hydroxyl terminated hyperbranched polyesters (Fig. 1) on the film properties, e.g. surface morphology, surface hydrophobicity, wetting, swelling kinetics and especially adsorption-relevant properties are in the focus of our interest. Additionally, the swelling behaviour of thin films of the hydroxyl terminated aromatic HBP in different aqueous media and adsorption of model proteins at solid-liquid interface of this HBP have already been investigated .
