This paper investigated an idea for a new interaction technique for pointing objects in a graphical user interface. The new technique combined two voluntarily produced actions: voluntary gaze direction for two-dimensional movement, and voluntary activation of a facial muscle corrugator supercilii (the muscle that knits and lowers the brows) for object selection. Seven subjects performed a series of pointing tasks using two pointing techniques: a mouse and the new technique. Ratings of subjective satisfaction for both techniques were also studied. As compared to the mouse, the new technique proved to be significantly faster but subjectively less preferred by the users. We suggest that the new technique described in this paper is a promising alternative for existing pointing techniques.
