What Can Be Learned From Past Research on Measuring Poverty, Material Hardship, and Child Development Outcomes?

When I first heard about the efforts to develop a measure of food security, I was skeptical. But I have been impressed by the effort to conceptualize and measure food security. I was asked to reflect on lessons we can learn about the measure of foodsecurity from our experiences, with other measures of important social phenomena. Rather than focusing on technical issues, I will focus on how the food security measure is likely to be used and interpreted.
