Joseph Gruber is a co-author of this paper.A household's current well-being depends not only on its current income, but also, in part, on past actions and its expectations of the future. Economists have incorporated into many analyses the effects of past actions and expectations. For example, our wages today depend on past human-capital investments; current consumption depends upon past savings; and the decision to participate in an assistance program depends, in part, on a household's expectation of future income.
