Residual 2~(nd) Quadrant Flux Leakage Data for Mechanical Damage Assessment

Mechanical Damage has been one of the sources of incidents for both hazardous liquid and gas pipelines. Much effort has been devoted to developing techniques to provide a means of detecting and assessing the severity of Mechanical Damage in operating pipelines. Results from several projects have identified the use of multiple field level MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) as one method of detecting and assessing these areas. Previously developed techniques using high and low magnetization levels will be applied to test data and compared to results using residual magnetization levels near or within the 2nd Quadrant of the magnetic curve of pipeline steels. This paper provides the results of data collected at high, low, and residual 2nd Quadrant magnetic field regions. Several features have been selected for detailed evaluation. The results and comparisons for each data set are presented.
