A Model has been developed to select optimal machinery based on real situation of Chinese State-run farm in Jinagsu province; this paper mainly describes the model's approach to machinery selection. It is based on a least-cost concept involving all fixed costs, variable costs and timeliness lost for a particular farm size and crop plan, the selection is based on the resources related to farm production, including available labour time, available tractors time, available implements time, available combines time, timeliness lost, operation parameters, sequence of operations. Output of the model are parameters about selected tractors, machines and combines. This model can also guide farmers to purchase machines or sell old ones based on minimum annualcost. So this model can be run by researchers and policy makers to explore different agricultural mechanisation scenarios, and it can also produce input data for overall farm planning model. Further more, it can be incorporated in a general Decision Support System (DSS) to improve its use by farmers as well.
