A prototype DSS (Decision Support System) is being developed to identify more productive and sustainable management practices in irrigation areas of the Yellow River basin (China). Central to this tool is a water supply model based on a simplified representation of the main water conveyance system. This model takes account of management rules to control the reliability and equity of water allocation in a system and includes features to manage the conjunctive use of local water supply sources. The present paper outlines the water supply modelling framework. It also discusses the potentialities of the DSS being developed to address specific issues in two pilot irrigation areas of the Yellow River basin.
