This paper explores the relationship between electrolyte properties and performance of the lithium/oxygen cell. Oxygen solubility, electrolyte conductivity, and electrolyte viscosity were measured for a series of electrolytes and correlated to specific capacity over a range of discharge rates. Using a one-dimensional model for 02 diffusion and the measured solubility, a strong correlation between discharge capacity and the 02 transport properties can be demonstrated. The relationship between the ability of the organic electrolyte to transport 02 into the porous carbon electrode and discharge capacity allows us to improve the performance of the lithium/oxygen cell through careful selection of electrolyte.
