Porous materials are widely used as structural materials of low specific weight or for purification of liquids, gas transfer in fuel cells etc. They may be considered as a kind of composites where pores play as a second phase. As to their mechanical behavior these materials may fail like dense non-porous ones with a few fracture mechanisms, mainly as follows: cleavage, brittle intergranular (interphase) fracture, and pores coalescence.
