DAMAGE TOLERANCE ISSUES FOR COMPOSITES

The use of continuous filament composite materials as primary structure, in such applications as aircraft structures, has renewed attentionon the structural integrity of such components. The issue of structural integrity includes stiffness, strength, durability and damage tolerance. These latter issues are key areas of concern to designers dealing with structural composites in order that the strength and/or stiffness of the structurese does not fall to an unacceptable level. In this presentation, the damage tolerance issue is examined for the case of continuous filament advanced composites with a polymer matrix binder. Such composites comprise over eighty percent of the classes of composites used in design applications.
