Nanoparticles are "building-Blocks" for nanostructured materias that are characterized by nanoscale (less than 100 nm) at least in one dimension and have been identified as the foundation for variety of future nanotechnologies. "Bottom-up" approaches (rather than "top-down" like grinding, lithography, etching) offer many fascinating feagtures in fabrication of nanoparticles, nanostructured surface morphologies, and nanocrystalline materials. Understanding and utilization of self-assembling plus particle nucleation and growth (SANG) phenomena in both solution and solid phases would allow us to develop enabling methodologies that could control and manipulate the formation of nanosize particles, nanostructures, or nanophases during material synthesis and processing.
