The utility of mixing fine (approx 1 mum) inorganic particles, such as highly selective zeolites, with polymeric matrices to improve gas separation properties has been explored. Many of these studies have met with little success.Recently,we have discovered that incorporation nanoscale (approx 10-50 nm),nonporous silica particles in poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne) [PMP] and other high free volume glassy polymers increases both gas permeability and orgaic vapor/permanent gas selectivity.
