The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) will be part of the core payload of the polar-orbiting EUMETSAT METOP-1 satellite to be launched in 2003 and should improve the vertical resolution and accuracy of retrieved temperature and humidity profiles. Our interest lies in utilizing IASI data to monitor climatic changes in the tropo-/stratosphere thermal structure and in upper troposphere moisture. For this purpose retrieval algorithms are currently developed based on simulated data. We reduce the number of channels by information-content based selection in order to make the retrieval efficient. Using an optimal estimation approach we retrieve temperature (T) and humidity (q) profiles and present results.
