While advanced analysis offers the most comprehensive means of accounting for system nonlinearity and inelasticity, it is possible within the level of computational capabilities available in a typical design office to rationally account for these effects in a simplified analysis-design methodology. The connection model presented can be used with first or second order analysis. Also, the proposed approach for handling the connection nonlinearity can, if desired, be utilized directly within the context of the current AISC-LRFD Specification (i.e. stability assessment via effective length.) For a large range of practical problems, however, appropriate modeling in the analysis eliminates the need for effective length factors in the member checks. The suggested modified elastic method provides results comparable to, yet conservative with respect to, the strength assessment via an advanced analysis.
