A conceptual framework for mathematical modeling in process development is presented and discussed. The methodology of analyzing the process into its building blocks, and subsequently synthesizing the pieces into a coherent and cohesive whole is described and discussed. The role of modeling in process development is reviewed; the case of low pressure plasma deposition is utilized to illustrate the methoology followed to develop a new process. Process optimization through math modeling is also discussed by reviewing the recent applications of math modeling for semi-solid metal casting. Challenges and critical issues, which need to be addressed by the materials science and engineering community are also presented and discussed.
