After the ban on CFC refrigerants by the Montreal protocol in 1987, a new generation of ozone-friendly refrigerants was developed to use in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. At that time, little data on the heat transfer performance was available for these new refrigerants. Much research work has been carried out since then to provide the industry with data on the HFC refrigerants. This paper presents some of the findings of the research work that has been carried out at the University of Brighton between 1995 and 1998. It gives internal heat transfer coefficient data for the evaporation and condensation of R404A, R407C and R417A. The influence of synthetic lubricating oils, which have been developed to use with the HFC refrigerants, is also presented here.
