The brewing industry is particularly interesting for the refrigeration engineer, because of the wide variety of cooling applications that occur. For an engineer concerned with energy efficiency, refrigeration is interesting because it generally accounts for one-third of the electricity consumed in a brewery. In order to explain developments in refrigeration in the brewing industry, it is necessary first to describe a little about the brewing process itself. In the following description we will concentrate mostly on those aspects of process that require cooling, passing quickly over those that are not relevant to the remainder of this paper. The description is generic and there are many variations around the general case described. Figure 1 shows the process in pictorial form.
