Scanning the Cracks

This paper was given at a symposium honouring the work of Larry Hench and his group. It describes in broad terms its relationship with medical and other groups in the application of Bioglass~direct R to ossicular replacements and other hearing prostheses. It used the symbol of cracks in materials to discuss the manner in which Professor Hench related to physicians and other colleagues and identifies three groups in such a collaboration: 1) technical employees and the need for precision in defining the final product; 2) creative colleagues and the importance of conversation; 3) the commercial dimension which the authors touch on but cannot claim a complete understanding.
