A literature review of arching experiments has shown a consensus of conservative design estimation of silo outlet sizes. The review also demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the arch formation. An investigation of cohesive arching, is outlined here along with the description of a plane flow test silo. In this investigation, the technique of laser ranging has been used to measure arch profiles, over a range of bulk solid conditions and hopper geometry's. A selection of the measured arches obtained "at emptying" are presented.
