Attrition of catalyst carrier beads - a relationship between single particle properties and bulk

摘要

The bulk crushing behaviour of catalyst carrier beads under compressive loading has been investigated at several strain rates experimentally and at one strain rate by simulation using the Distinct Element Analysis. For the latter, single particle crushing strength and other mechanical properties are used as the input data in the analysis. Experimental BCS test results show that there is an appreciable decrease in the extent of breakage experienced by an assembly under compressive loading with an increase in the strain rate from quasi-static values. The predictions of the DEA analysis follow the same qualitative trend as the experimental data for similar strain rates. However, the computer simulations underestimate the breakage slightly. Further work is ongoing to elucidate the discrepancy.
