Transforming towards a 'Risk thinking' organization by implementing RBI - Case study: RBI implementation at a petrochemical site in Europe

The base for the implementation of a risk based inspection methodology for optimizing risk performance was a process safety assessment at a site in Europe owned by a multinational company operating various petrochemical and chemical plants. The aim of the process safety assessment was to identify the blind spots in the barriers that prevent incidents and to create awareness in the organization of the improvement potential. In the area of asset integrity a lot of good work has been done that is based on the experienced and knowledgeable people in the plant. But two main challenges were identified, risk thinking in all aspects of asset integrity and closing the loop and the link to other disciplines to learn from the output of the process. For example, addressing not only the statutory requirements for inspection but also taking into account the risk of each relevant degradation mechanism and linking in the RBI process the degradation mechanisms with the operating window.
