Magnesium is with around 1.94% the 8th most abundant element on the earth. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and a density which is only 2/3 that of aluminium and 1/4 that of iron. Therefore magnesium alloys are being often used in automotive, aerospace and electronic industries. Unfortunately most magnesium alloys are prone to corrosion, so their application is limited to mild service environments. Magnesium is not intrinsically able to form a protecting oxide layer like aluminium, due to the poor Pilling-Bedworth ratio. There are always cracks in the oxide layer which makes the metal susceptible to corrosion. For a higher durability of Mg alloys there is a demand for sophisticated coatings with improved corrosion performance.
