The internationalization with its increased competitiveness requires that manufacturers provide products at ever faster rates with ever better price/performance ratios. This is especially true for large work pieces, which need to be manufactured to ever-tighter tolerances in today's aerospace market. There are two major ways which parts are manufactured in the aerospace industry as well as many other industries. One uses tools in which parts are placed. Manual assembly and drilling/routing operations or machine drilling/routing/riveting is performed in these tools. Manufacturing with hard tooling lacks from the tolerance stack up. This is due to the many levels of errors which add up. The final position of the drill bit with respect to the part depends on the geometry of the tool, the placement and holding of the part in the tool, the position of the template in the tool, and finally the holding of the drill bit in the template. While each of these sub-elements are routinely inspected with a 3D-metrology system the effects of mechanical slack and measurement errors add up.
