摘要

This paper introduced a new construction practice, the tunnel-column method as someone called, in one of the metro station projects of Beijing, China. The station is located just under the western side of Tian'anmen Square which is famous in the world and political important in China. For the environmental safety, a numerical analysis was made for the new method before construction. As the theoretical prediction coincided very well with that of measurement, the environmental effect induced by underground construction was well controlled. The experience of this project is valuable to the similar problems of large-scale underground excavation in urban areas.
