A team of researchers consisting of faculty from the University of Delaware and the University of Texas are working with engineers at the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) to evaluate the performance of a new High Performance Concrete (HPC) bridge. Both the performance of the HPC itself, as well as the performance of the constructed bridge is being studied. Material testing of the concrete being used will allow important properties to be evaluated. By embedding a variety of sensor systems within several of the beams during construction, both short- and long-term behavior will also be monitored. The sensors being used include a variety of vibrating wire strain gages, thermocouples, and novel corrosion detection systems. The paper will provide an overview of this showcase project and highlight the results of the material testing program to date.
