URBAN WATERSHED FLOOD MITIGATION PLANNING AND FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT

The activities of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District in addressing drainage and flood control problems in the Denver area were described. Since its creation in 1969, these problems were addressed through master planning, floodplain delineation and floodplain management, design and construction of flood control projects, and the maintenance of major drainageways. As a result, significant reduction of drainage and flooding problems has resulted, while floodplain management has significantly reduced the building of structures within 100-year flood prone areas. Where flooding was a common occurrence in the past, recent heavy rainstorms have produced little or no flood damage. Although much was accomplished since 1969, much still remains to be done to mitigate flood damage potential in remaining urban flood prone areas of the District. Some of the technical developments that are instrumental in solving regional flooding problems in the Denver metropolitan area were also discussed.
