We have developed a ceramic microfiltration system for the removal of heavy metals. This new treatment technology (patent pending) has been able to consistently meet the proposed Metal Products and Machinery (MP&M) standards while at the same time reducing the cost for wastewater treatment. This paper will discuss the advantages of using ceramic microfiltration for metal finishing wastewater treatment, the treatment technology and computer control system, and it provides three case studies for wastewater treatment. The case studies include a large and medium metal finishing operation and a large captive shop. In each case study, the payback for the initial capital expenditure was less than two years. The average chemical cost savings was 30%. The average labor savings over conventional treatment was 40%. The comparative wastewater treatment methods were clarification and ion exchange. The average effluent values were reduced by a factor of 10 to 20 times when compared to previous treatment technologies.
