During the last decade, popularity of the stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) subsurface radar had considerably grown compared to pulse radar, which was commonly used for ground penetration. This can be attributed to decreasing cost of RF technologies, more flexibility of SFCW systems from a viewpoint of antenna design, applicability of calibration and better signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. Typically, singla processing in frequency domain radar is based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) followed by some imaging method utilizing spatial distributions of collected data such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
