There is a multitude of things going on in your manufacturing operation every day that affects your line speeds, production and scrap rates, and ultimately, your bottom line. Variation in a raw material is one important factor. It usually is a hidden factor as well. There must be a consistent product coming in the back door to have a process in control. Raw material specifications are the way this variable is controlled. Raw material specifications are a two way street. The user has to know what properties affect his process and how much variation he can accept without something changing in his process. The needs must be set with good experimentation. The supplier must understand that the need is real and is based on hard data. The supplier must know that his own process can supply within those specifications. For rigid PVC, the things you must ask about your major raw material, suspension poly-(vinyl chloride), are: (1) What is the bulk density of your resin? (2)What, if any, anti-stat do you use on your resin? (3) What is the particle size distribution of your resin? (4)What is the moisture level (5)What is the molecular weight? (6)What is the contamination level? (7)How do my specification match your process?
