New Ways of Evaluating Carbohydrates: Implications for Liquid Feeds

Since the 1800’s, the carbohydrates not in crude fiber or neutral detergent fiber (NDF) have been calculated by difference. These carbohydrates are called nitrogen-free extract, or more recently, non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC). The NFC continue to becalculated rather than analyzed directly because of the many types of carbohydrates included in this fraction (Figure 1). The lack of methods, or problems with the assays for individual carbohydrates made it impractical to individually measure NFC and sum the components.
