Eastman Chemical Company, headquartered in Kingsport, TN, is an international supplier of organic chemicals, fibers and plastics with annual sales of approximately $4.6 billion and approximately 5300 customers worldwide. Tennessee Eastman Division, also located in Kingsport, is the company's largest manufacturing facility. The nine hundred acre site contains manufacturing facilities as well as industrial landfills, a wastewater treatment plant, power generation facilities, incineration facilities, facilities for miscellaneous utility requirements and support services for administration, engineering, research, sales, environmental, health and safety and security. Tennessee Eastman Division was established in 1920 to produce methanol for use in Eastman Kodak Company's photographic film base. Today the division manufactures over 400 industrial intermediate chemicals, two basic fibers and three basic types of plastics. Waste minimization and material reuse and recycling represent a basic manufacturing philosophy, and process improvement to reduce waste is a continuing objective. Tennessee Eastman operates extensive solvent and acid recovery operations resulting in the recycling of billions of pounds of solvents and acids each year. Eastman's hierarchy of secondary materials management includes direct reuse through aggressive marketing, recycle/reuse, combustion and landfill as a last resort.
