The nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) were prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using 900 °C or 950 °C. The ruthenium selenide (Ru_(85)Se_(15)) nanoparticles supported on NCNTs were then synthesized through a microwave assisted route. It was found that the amorphous Ru_(85)Se_(15) nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the NCNTs with no apparent particle agglomeration being observed. The as-prepared Ru_(85)Se_(15)/NCNTs exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction and relatively good stability. The half-wave potentials reached 0.57~0.58 V with the electron transfer numbers of 3.2~3.5. Nearly 50 mV potential degradation was observed with the Ru_(85)Se_(15)/NCNTs-900 upon 1400 cycles by voltammetry in 0.5 mol·L~(-1) sulfate acid solutions.
