The advantages of the magnesium alloys are their lightness and low energy consumption for recycling [1]. On the other hand, the disadvantages of magnesium alloys are poor corrosion resistance and formability. However, the formability is improved when the magnesium alloys are deformed at elevated temperature. Poor corrosion resistance seems to be intrinsic to magnesium from a view point of ionization tendency. About sixty years ago, Hanawalt and Nelson showed that the corrosion resistance in pure magnesium and in Mg-Zn and Mg-Mn alloys could be improved by decreasing amounts of heavy metal impurities, such as Fe, Cu, Ni and Co [2]. The effects of the heavy elements on corrosion resistance have been recently reconfirmed on pure magnesium with 6N purity [3] and magnesium alloys with low contents of these elements [4, 5]. These reports show that the corrosion resistance of magnesium and magnesium alloys can be easily improved, which is the case when the alloys are made only from primary ingots.
