Development of a modular design methodology for products designed to suit individual customer requirements - a case study

Customisation of a known design to suit individual customer requirements is a common task for many companies. This paper proposes a design methodology to simplify this task and promote a modular design perspective to this often-chaotic problem. It involves the functional analysis of existing design cases in order to determine functional subsystems, which are modelled parametrically. These core subsystems can then be combined with user-specific parts to form the required design. The methodology is backed-up with a complex, industrial case study which is part of an ongoing research between Hydrowflow and the Department of Systems Engineering of Brunel University.
