QUALITY PRINCIPLES FOR CATALYST TESTING DURING PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

This paper describes a Total Quality Management (TQM) system for achieving optimum productivity in catalyst testing at the laboratory level. Four guidelines for effectiveness are proposed which include: specifying goals and obtaining sponsor support, applying effective experimental strategies, collecting meaningful catalyst performance data and reporting the results in a professional way, including a critical evaluation. Regarding efficiency, five guidelines are discussed: selecting the appropriate laboratory reactor, establishing an ideal flow pattern, ensuring isothermal operation, diagnosing and minimizing transport disguises and assessing catalyst stability. These nine guidelines are based on many years of experience and are consistent with best practices published in the literature. They may motivate experienced researchers to try new avenues in future situations, while they are providing assistance to newcomers in the catalysis field.
