This paper presents an outline of the main contents of and the methods applied in the reclamation research project on Pingguo Bauxite Mine, with the emphasis put on the development of both engineering and biological technologies and their effects. Considering the deficient soil resources, difficulties in rehabilitation and high land occupation rate, local industrial wastes were tested as an artificial cultivable material for reclamation. Biological, engineering and mycorrhiza techniques were integrated to facilitate soil maturing and vegetation reestablishment. As a result, a man-made ecological system has been seen around the mine area within a short period of time, where arable lands dominate with forest-shrub-grass surroundings, and the ecological environment has been improved remarkably. The reclamation rate at the mine has reached 93.3% with vegetation coverage 95% and reclamation cycle curtailed to 1.5-2 years. The technology described hereinafter has past a technical appraisal organized by the Ministry of State Land & Resources, evincing its value to wider application in rehabilitating abandoned lands disturbed and damaged by mining and other industrial activities across the country.
