In this paper, the benefits of convex numerical optimization in combination with a suitable parametrization of all stable closed-loop systems are presented. In particular, the requirements of multivariable plants are considered. The problem formulation presented here involves the optimization of several outputs as well as the optimization of several objective functions. The advantage of our approach is the ability to compute the achievable performance of multivariable systems without the necessity of a priori information about the closed-loop behavior. This approach enables the controller designer to compute the achievable performance with an optimal controller independently for the controller structure and order. It constitutes an effective tool to explore different control structures and to integrate the performance of the ontrolled plant into the plant optimization process. The advantage of our approach is demonstrated on the model of a heat integrated distillation column.
