Present Status and Expectation on Wetland Conservation in Agricultural Area in China

The Ministry of Agriculture set up a leading group headed by a vice minister and participated by many bureau's heads responsible for wetland conservation in agricultural area in China, just following the international workshop entitled "The Action Plan for Wetland Conservation in China held in Yueyang City, Hunan Province in Dec. 1999". This group is in charge of conservation, wise exploitation, and environment evaluation on wetland in agricultural area in China. In the meantime, it has been focussing on survey of agricultural wetland, duplication of eco-agriculture, strengthening eco-monitoring, and intercalating natural protection regions in macro-reclamation areas, key wetland pastures, important aquatic zones as well as several habitants where rare and invaluable wildlife are in extinction. Under the leadership of the leading group, Agro-Environmrntal Protection Institute made a detailed survey in terms of distribution, present status and existing problems of wetland conservation in a-gricultural area in China with assistance of relevant organizations. It has been indicated from the survey that the wetlands of agricultural area in China are characterized by large areas, a variety of types, significantly ecological function and abundant biodiversity. However, the wetlands in China are also facing quite a few problems such as shrink of the areas, pollution, decrease of their function as well as decline of biodiversity s abundance and so on. Based on the situation, we table here several concrete aims and recommendations on wetland conservation of agricultural area in China.
